A ball pit birthday party is the rare kind of celebration that thrills the birthday child, entertains every sibling and cousin in the room, and still lets the grown-ups actually sip their coffee. If you're planning a birthday in Montreal or on the South Shore and want the "wow" without the stress, this guide walks you through every decision — from the right age to the colours of the balls.
Is a ball pit the right choice for your child's age?
Almost always, yes. A ball pit birthday party works beautifully for ages 1 through 6, and Happi Hop's padded enclosures are safe for babies from about 6 months up to roughly 10 years with light supervision. First birthdays and 2-year-old parties are our single most popular bookings — at that age a sea of soft, colourful balls is pure sensory magic, and there's nothing to "win" or "lose," so no meltdowns.
For older kids (5–8), pairing the pit with our pyramid climber turns it into an obstacle-course-style play zone that keeps bigger kids busy too.
Pick a theme (and let the balls do the work)
The quickest way to make a ball pit birthday party look designed rather than thrown-together is to choose a colour story and match the ball colours to it. A few favourites with Montreal families:
- "Wild One" first birthday: mint, white and clear balls with a few greens — perfect for a jungle or safari first birthday.
- Princess / ballerina: blush pink and lavender, optionally with our clear-wall Clear Hop for dreamy photos.
- Winter ONEderland: white, silver and clear — ideal for the long Montreal winter birthdays.
- Rainbow / confetti: a full mix for a bright, joyful, anything-goes party.
Add a custom vinyl name decal with your child's name and age, and the setup instantly becomes the photo backdrop of the party.
How to time the day
For toddlers, the sweet spot is a 90-minute to 2-hour party scheduled around naps — late morning (10:00–11:30) or mid-afternoon (2:00–4:00) works best. A simple flow that never fails:
- First 30 min: free play in the ball pit as guests arrive.
- Middle: cake and a song while energy is high.
- Last 30–45 min: back into the pit for photos and the last bursts of energy before pickup.
Because Happi Hop delivers, sets up before guests arrive, and returns to pack everything down, you're never scrambling during the party itself.
Which package for a birthday?
Any of our four packages makes a great birthday centrepiece — it mostly comes down to space and guest count:
- The Little Hop ($350): 5ft round pit — perfect for an intimate living-room first birthday.
- The Classic Hop ($450): 6×6ft pit plus a soft slide — our most-booked birthday setup.
- The Clear Hop ($550): 7×7ft with clear walls — the best choice if photos matter.
- The Grand Hop ($750): 8×8ft showpiece for a hall or a big guest list.

Indoors or outdoors in Montreal?
Both work. Indoors — a living room, basement, condo party room or rented hall — is the safe bet year-round given Montreal weather. Outdoors is wonderful from late spring through early fall; you'll just want a flat, shaded spot and a backup plan for rain. For any package, plan on at least a 3m × 3m clear area.
